Too Much Stress!

This was a sad weekend. After hearing the horrific news about the shooting in El Paso, I also got a few calls from friends who were feeling anxiety as well as a client who is struggling from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

It seemed where ever I turned someone was experiencing some sort of distress. It is estimated that 1/3 of the children today suffer from some sort of anxiety disorder. That means that they have a hard time regulating their emotions. What is driving their behaviors?

I can remember when I was around 9 years old and in the 4th grade, I forgot my homework and the teacher made me go sit in the back of a 3rd grade class to teach me a lesson. Well needless to say I was humiliated, stressed and felt completely horrible. I balled my eyes out and was afraid to tell my parents about this, so I just kept it to myself. I became fearful of many things after that. These are some of the things that can cause anxiety in children.

Children will develop all sorts of disorders from events where they don’t feel safe and protected. Besides the children today are more disconnected from nature. The internet and social media can create social isolation from bullying. Lack of exercise and movement as well as the diets and environmental factors  are also causing psychological disturbances within children. Parents are stressed out too, having to juggle so many things on their plate.  And children as well as adults are being bombarded with way to much stimulation.

So what can you do? Go outside, connect with nature, play, communicate in a loving way. Shut off the TV or computer, put down your phones and move, dance or do some form of physical activity. Eat more fruits and vegetables and get rid of the proceeded foods. Engage in more social activities.

There are many natural approaches to anxiety rather than medication. I know I found them, and I know you can too.
