I just came home after visiting a friend in the hospital in the ICU. ICU is short for intensive care unit. He was hooked up to every device imaginable and unimaginable. There were so many machines and gadgets keeping him alive that I wondered at the marvel of the human body.
I know that our body always tries to achieve homeostasis. The dictionary describes this as:
1. The tendency of a system, especially the physiological system of higher animals, to maintain internal stability, owing to the coordinated response of its parts to any situation or stimulus that would tend to disturb its normal condition or function.
2. Psychology . a state of psychological equilibrium obtained when tension or a drive has been reduced or eliminated.
I thank God for the wonders and miracles that are helping people live while their bodies are not able to function on their own and achieve this homeostasis. I also feel that life is a precious gift and we should be able to return home if and when our bodies no longer can function on its own. It is a fine line between life and death. At what point do we let go or continue to let these machines assist us in living? Is it living or existing? I pray that my friend will get better. These are the days of miracles and wonders.
